David Barker Finds Victory Lane in ULMA Action … Clancy
Takes Second Win of ‘08!
By Sam Stoecklin

Warrensburg, MO
August 20, 2008
Kingsville, Missouri driver David Barker became the fifteenth different
ULMA feature winner last week after picking up the checkered flag at
Lucas Oil Speedway in a hard-fought run to the finish over J.D. Hubert.
Barker’s first ULMA win came at the expense of 19 other fierce
competitors during the main event. Heat race winners at Lucas include
Hubert and Walter Imhoff of Jamestown, Missouri. By virtue of his eighth
to second-place run in his heat race, Barker started on pole for the
feature race where he quickly shot out to the lead, which he never
conceded. Hubert wound up second at the line, up from his fourth
starting spot on the grid. Brett Rollert recorded his best run of the
year at the track by finishing third ahead of Matt Menzie and Jake
Williams in fourth and fifth. Rounding out the top ten were John
Fellers, Kevin Kaiser, Andy Kennedy, Paul Neel and James Rutledge. ULMA
Late Models have the week off this week at Lucas Oil Speedway in
Wheatland, Missouri due to a special event at the track. Action resumes
at the ‘Diamond of Dirt Tracks’ the following Saturday, August 30th and
then again one more time on Saturday, August 6th, which is the final
weekly race night at the track. For a complete schedule and track
information log on to the speedway’s Web site at
www.lucasoilspeedway.com .
Steve Clancy of Odessa raced hard against early race leader Bob King of
Independence and ultimately ended the night with his second ULMA-sanctioned
event of the year at Warrensburg’s Central Missouri Speedway. A solid
field of eighteen ULMA late models competed in three heat races with
King, Clancy, and Allen Perryman all visiting victory lane. King and
Clancy started on the pole positions for the 15-lap feature as ten
fast-paced laps were clicked off with Clancy reeling in King by lap ten.
King held the lead with Clancy and Ryun nose-to-tail near the front
until Ryun went up and over the turn one embankment while trying to pass
the lead duo on the high side. Clancy moved to the front by lap thirteen
and held off the charge of King in second. Gary Billings ran solidly to
third just ahead of Allen Perryman in fourth, Jeremy Watts fifth. Mike
Ryun, David Angell, and Jon Binning rounded out the top eight. Remaining
ULMA points-earning nights at CMS include this Saturday, August 23rd,
August 30th, and September 6th, the final night of action at CMS. With
the announcement by CMS promoters/owners Earl and Susan Walls that the
track is up for sale, the future of late model racing at CMS seems to be
uncertain at this time. The track’s Web site is located at
www.centralmissourispeedway.net or you may call the speedway’s
Track Report line at (660) 747-2166 for further information.
Valley Speedway (CMS) did not hold races for the ULMA late models last
week; however, the track is set to return this Friday, August 22nd for a
final four-week run of races including this Friday as well as August
29th, September 5th, and September 12th. For payout and track
information as well as the remaining schedule be sure to check out the
track’s official Web site at
www.valleyspeedway.com .
Counting this weekend, there are 9 more points-earning events possible
between the three affiliated tracks. Jon Binning continues to chew away
at Jason Bodenhamer’s points lead and now sits only 42 points behind in
second place. Close behind Binning is California, Missouri driver James
Rutledge. Leading rookie of the year candidate Mike Ryun holds down
fourth with Brett Wood resting in fifth. From sixth place to tenth are
Bryon Allison, Jake Williams, Steve Clancy, Randy Ainsworth, and David
Angell. The following is a brief synopsis regarding where drivers need
to finish to improve upon their overall 15 best points-earning nights:
Bodenhamer needs a finish of 4th or better to gain points, Binning needs
a finish of 7th or better to gain points, Rutledge needs a finish of 5th
or better to gain points, Ryun needs a finish of 6th or better to gain
points, Wood needs a finish of 7th or better to gain points, Allison
needs a finish of 24th or better to gain points, Williams needs a finish
of 17th or better to gain points, and Ainsworth needs a finish of 14th
or better to gain.
Sadly, ULMA lost another special event last Thursday evening when racing
activities were cancelled during the Missouri State Fair. Mother
Nature’s wrath has not set well on tracks or the association this year.
The association will present its awards for 2008 at the October 4th
special ULMA event at Lucas Oil Speedway during the intermission-time
break. Look for more details to be released concerning this event in the
coming weeks. There will be no ULMA banquet this year. ULMA board
members are currently in negotiations for some additional races at the
end of the season. If your business is in the greater Kansas City and
would be interested in teaming with ULMA for possible events at Valley
Speedway, I-70 Speedway, or I-35 Speedway, please get a hold of us at
your earliest convenience. The association prides itself on taking care
of its sponsors and is continually looking for ways to improve business
partner relations.
