With only seven more weekends of racing left in the inaugural year for
the W-K Chevrolet United Late Model Association (ULMA), drivers are
finding themselves moving up and down the point standings sheet after
each and every event. This week alone there were 14 changes amongst the
top 20 in the overall standings. Only 234 points separates first from
tenth with the current leader, Jason Estes, having a slim 24-point lead
over Brett Rollert. Estes was one of several drivers this past weekend
to post two top five finishes, a 3rd-place run at Valley Speedway and
runner-up finish at Central Missouri Speedway (CMS). Second-in-points
Brett Rollert posted 8th- and 4th-place finishes during weekend
competition. James Rutledge, who moved up to third overall, finished 4th
at Callaway Raceways on Friday and 3rd at Central Missouri Speedway on
Saturday. Danny Lorton also moved up one spot to fourth in the overall
standings by posting a 2nd at Callaway and 5th at CMS. Kevin Coyne, who
has been sidelined for a week slipped back to 5th overall while Chad
Frewaldt moved up four spots to sixth overall with Jon Binning down one
to seventh and Brett Wood down one to eighth. Jamie Wineland and Kevin
Kaiser also dropped one spot each to ninth and tenth respectively. A
full point’s rundown appears at the end of this write-up. For the
remainder of the season Callaway Raceways in Fulton, Missouri has six
nights left for ULMA drivers to earn points; Lucas Oil Speedway in
Wheatland, Missouri has five; Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, Missouri
has seven as does Central Missouri Speedway in Warrensburg, Missouri.
Leading rookie of the year candidate Brett Wood recorded two top ten
finishes last weekend with a fourth at Valley (his best of the year) and
9th at CMS. Jim Adkins of Kansas City, Missouri posted his best finish
of the year with a strong second-place showing at Valley Speedway. Other
top ten runs from last weekend were posted by Jeff Schlup who was third
at Callaway, Zach Green seventh at Valley, Jon Binning sixth at CMS and
Danny Monroe who was eighth at CMS. There are currently ten drivers who
have crossed over the 15-starts threshold. In the coming weeks eight
more drivers will also hit 15 starts for the year and will begin tossing
away their poorest points-earning nights. Just to demonstrate how tight
things are with the points, Wood, who has 22 starts so far this year
sitting in eighth in the overall standings, has amassed 15 top ten
finishes to count toward his overall points. Of the 15 finishes that he
is currently keeping, his worst is a 10th place, which means the next
time he posts a 9th or better finish he will discard the 10th place
finish! This points-earning schematic will probably see the championship
decided at or near the end of the season the second weekend in
September.
This Saturday, July 28th at Lucas Oil Speedway, according to
www.lucasoilspeedway.com
several ULMA member drivers are qualified for the Sawyer Tire Spring
Bling Showdown, a special twelve-lap dash race for extra prize money.
The qualified drivers include A.L. Barbour, Bob Hiller, Chad Frewaldt,
Donnie Gemes, James Rutledge, Walt Imhoff, Jeff Schlup, Jeff Shere,
Kevin Kaiser and Shawn Williams. Drivers will also compete in the
regular Saturday night racing action at Lucas Oil Speedway. CMS will run
their regularly scheduled races this Saturday as will Callaway Raceways
and Valley Speedway on Friday night, July 27th; meaning all four ULMA
tracks will be in action this coming Friday and Saturday. For more
information about ULMA visit the official Website at www.ulmaracing.com.
The association currently has both hats and T-shirts for sale, ULMA
members and affiliate members receive discounts on official ULMA
merchandise. Anyone wishing to purchase either a hat or t-shirt may do
so at any of the affiliated tracks by asking for the ULMA track
representative. Proceeds from the sale of merchandise go toward the
end-of-year point’s fund. ULMA is currently making plans for the 2008
season from everything to rules inputs for review to additional
sponsorship. Potential sponsors or interested personnel should visit the
official Website and check out the association’s business profile; we
think you’ll like what you read about us! Don’t get left behind in the
dust … racing with ULMA is a must!
The ULMA would like to thank all of its sponsors for the 2007 season.
When you visit our great sponsors tell them you heard about them through
the ULMA and thank them for their support of dirt-track racing!
